Gareth,

Assuming the Thunderbolt 4 enclosure is compatible with Thunderbolt 3, when connected to a Thunderbolt 3 port, shouldn't it run at the max speed of Thunderbolt 3, which is significantly faster than 10 GB/sec (aka USB 3.1 Gen 2)?

I guess if it was actually TB4. But, what I'm now realizing, is that there aren't really many true TB4 enclosures out there. Most of them are actually USB4, which probably explains the "slow down" on TB3, although I don't know the details behind that.

If you select TB4/USB4 enclosures on OWC's site, you only get two options, the Ministack STX and the new OWC Express 1M2 (which is actually USB4 and the only option when you select USB4).

But, the Ministack STX (as the only true TB4 enclosure listed) doesn't list speed specs for different connection types.

I actually have a Ministack STX. Maybe if I ever get bored, I'll try some speed tests, but don't hold your breath for that!

Gareth,

And therein lies the issue with your posts and why your muddling things. When I think of a Thunderbolt 4 enclosure, I only consider Thunderbolt 4 enclosures. If I discuss a Thunderbolt 4 enclosure, tt isn't a USB 4 enclosure that is compatible with Thunderbolt 4 ports. It's a true Thunderbolt 4 enclosure. Just like when I discuss Thunderbolt 3 enclosures, they aren't USB 3.x enclosures that can be connected to a Thunderbolt 3 port. They are true Thunderbolt 3 enclosures.

You can go ahead and blame me, but consider that the source of this confusing information is coming from OWC! I mean it took me this entire thread to sort it out, just imagine what it must be like for the average consumer!

If I click on an option for "Thunderbolt 4", I sort of expect to get "Thunderbolt 4". Granted, that option (at OWC) is actually "Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C)" and likewise the TB3 option is "Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)". Am I to assume that's going to show a mix of Thunderbolt and USB options or is it specifying that the TB3/4 connector is USB-C shaped? Hmm...

According to one review, this Sabrent enclosure won't work on any USB-C port except a T3 port.

It's claimed not to be compatible with other USB standards that might be found using the USB-C connector.

I haven't seen any other mention of this.

AMZ has it for $100 vs B&H's $80.

But not being compatible with any USB-C port is a bit of an issue for me, even more so than the keyed cable.

Since T4 boxes are still pricey and largely untested by many 'review' sites, I want a T3/USB4 box.

Getting (theoretically) 10Gbps is fine on those ports, but I want to see something much closer to the (theoretical) 40Gbps than 1500Mbps.

I just noticed this from AMZ/Sabrent:

PLEASE NOTE: NOT compatible with USB-C ports. Your device must have a compatible Thunderbolt 3 port, otherwise the enclosure will not work!

So that's a wave-off for me, even though it's a T3 box.

All you have to do is buy a case and drive... but be aware that 2500 MBs is the best Ive ever gotten with my TBolt 3 case. On a 2020 27" iMac. 4 TB, two 2 TB ina RAID 0, 1.5 GB on disk.

Although the OWC case @ 3100 MB/s is interesting, all heatsink. Ha. It has faster specs than the OWC thunderblade, (which has an extra TBolt port).

Re: Sabrent TB enclosure $20 off - Robert M - 12-09-2023

RAM,

The confusion is because Thunderbolt 3 and 4 the protocols use USB-C the physical port. The Sabrent box is a true Thunderbolt enclosure even if the Thunderbolt cable used to connect has USB-C on the ends. That's why it isn't compatible with USB even if the USB protocol is using USB-C the port.

I thought the B&H price was $99 after the $20.00 discount. I still wouldn't buy the box because of the notched cable/port nonsense. I'd get another OWC Envoy Express which offers the same speed, rock solid reliability and does it without nonsense.

Hi everyone,

I stand corrected aboiut the price. Didn't catch that the $20.00 off is applied at checkout. However, even $79.99, it's no deal. for $10.00 more, I'd rather have an Envoy Express and support our sponsor. No notch nonsense.

USB-C is the connector, that’s it. Just like the rectangular ones are USB-A. It has nothing to do with transmission/reception protocol.
