My kindle only needs to be capable of a few things, and does it for far less money than an iPad.

Did you try adding content using the "Send to Kindle" functionality? That saves the content into your Amazon account and I've had success with it. The formatting requirements can be finicky but a re-save as ePub from Calibre usually does the trick (yes, even if it starts as an ePub).

Some models of Kindles (eInk?) can be read easily in bright sunlight, unlike most iPads and 'Phones.

I don't know if those same Kindles have built-in light for indoor reading.

My 'Phone gets hot if I spend any time in bright sunlight.
