Slide rules are for quick ballparking. The typical slide rule is only good to 3 decimals. Yes, the (male) engineers used them extensively at NASA in the early days of the space program. An engineer without a slide rule was practically naked back in the day. But women did the useful calculations, usually in the basement, often on paper in long-hand. And they programmed the flight computers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christine_Darden#NASA's_%22human_computers%22 Re: So it appears SpaceX made the same mistake twice now, in losing Starship.... - GGD - 03-09-2025 One thing this failure showed was that it was a reproducible bug, so it should be easier to find. Re: So it appears SpaceX made the same mistake twice now, in losing Starship.... - ztirffritz - 03-09-2025 I interpret this as a successful failure. They’ve learned that the failure mode isn’t what they thought or is different from what they thought. What sucks is that they have 2 or 3 ships in various stages of production already that may or may not have the same flaws built into them.
