Re: Cheesey '80s songs that evoke strong memories - rz - 04-25-2007 There are songs from the 80s that evoke strong memories for me, but I wouldn't refer to them as cheesy. I remember songs like "I Will Follow" and "Out of Control" by U2, "How Soon is Now?" from the Smiths, "Just Like Heaven" and "Faith" from The Cure, just about anything from REM's "Murmur" LP, Depeche Mode, New Order, etc. MTV really opened my musical horizons back then. They played stuff you wouldn't hear on the local Rock or Top 40 stations. I used to stay up to watch "120 Minutes". I was 16 back in 1981 when we got MTV and until then I had been a fan of what would be referred to now as "Classic Rock". By the time I hit college, I couldn't even listen to that stuff anymore. It's only been recently that I've started to listen to Classic Rock again. Re: Cheesey '80s songs that evoke strong memories - Marc Anthony - 04-25-2007 Some chick named Erica crashed my first car to the industrial sounds of Nitzer Ebb, that's pretty memorable for me, but I can't recall the track. Probably the cheesiest thing I can remember listening to back in the day was Sigue Sigue Sputniks hit, "Love Missile F1-11". There was really a lot of fun music back in the 80s. It seemed, overall, more consistently enjoyable than a lot of today's music. Yaz' "Upstairs at Erics" is probably one of my all-time favorite albums. Re: Cheesey '80s songs that evoke strong memories - Silencio - 04-25-2007 All that 80s tripe is only good for one thing: private room karaoke, with lots of alcohol and a bunch of friends. Great -- now I'm going to have Sigue "Sigue" Sputnik stuck in my head all day. SHO-O-OT IT U-U-U-U-U-P! Re: Cheesey '80s songs that evoke strong memories - pRON aHOLIC - 04-25-2007 FAME! I'm gonna live forever! FAME! Re: Cheesey '80s songs that evoke strong memories - threeprong - 04-25-2007 "Every little things she does is magic" - The Police Several INXS songs The Pretty in Pink soundtrack Cheese factor one... "Been gone so long" Chilliwack Re: Cheesey '80s songs that evoke strong memories - Lew Zealand - 04-25-2007 Best thing about this thread: I recognize a number of these song names but can't for the lifer of me remember how they sounded. For example: "Been gone so long" Chilliwack The Pretty in Pink soundtrack Love Missile F1-11 Electric Blue (Icehouse) Unfortunately I do remember most of the rest but al least I've forgotten some of them!! Poochies: good call on blasting Paul's Boutique as a audio reply Re: Cheesey '80s songs that evoke strong memories - Silencio - 04-25-2007 Lew, you'd really prefer we don't remind you in most of those cases. Icehouse was one of the most insipid bands of all time. UGH! A Roxy Music wannabe on quaaludes and gin. Skip OMD's most shameful but best-selling moment and check out Suzanne Vega's "Left Of Center" (with Joe Jackson on the piano), New Order's "Shellshock" (sadly edited to about half of its original length), Echo & The Bunnymen, The Smiths, Psychedelic Furs, some band convering Nik Kershaw's "Wouldn't It Be Good" and doing a much better job at it than the original... That John Hughes had a way with soundtracks.
