If your luck is like mine the shutoff valve going into the toilet will not shut off the water completely. Or it will leak when you turn the valve. Something to look out for.

The most common cause, as stated, is the flapper. There is a possibility that it's the fill valve or seat, though.
Replace the flapper first. If that doesn't stop it, fill the tank, shut off the water, and let it sit overnight. The water will leak into the bowl and stop (in the tank) at the height of the offending part.

Using those bleach toilet bowl cleaning tablets kills flappers.
So if you have a bunch of pesky flappers doing the Charleston in front of your house, you know what to do.

Of course we still need you, this is one of those simple plumbing repairs. Plenty of opportunity for you to shine when one of those more difficult plumbing problems comes along. :-)
