Perhaps Point Pelee (75 mins) or Pinery Provincial Park (2 hours) in Ontario....

Another suggestion is to come my way. Saugatuck is a nice, romantic getaway http://www.saugatuck.com/index.asp , Holland is always fun, you can check out wooden shoes, tulips, and more. http://holland.org/ Grand Haven is a pleasant visit: http://www.grandhaven.com/

West Michigan is anywhere from 2 hours (to Grand Rapids) to 2 1/2 hours to the shore from west Detroit area (I-96&I-696 or I-96&I-75)

Closer to your area, Frankenmuth is a nice town, and Birch Run Outlet mall is close! So is Bronner's the all-year Christmas store: http://www.bronners.com/

Heading to Canada for a half-hour drive from the Ambassador Bridge? It'll get you to Pelee Island Winery (a destination I'd like to go to some time.) http://info.detnews.com/wine/columns/silfven/details.cfm?id=124

Thanks for all the suggestions. Still a little undecided so we'll probably pick 2-3 destinations and go next Friday and Saturday.
