You must be using an HR10-250, not an R10.
According to the resident expert at tivocommunity.com (with over 25,000 posts) "there is no public hack that gets around the PROM hack needed on the R10 and the Night Light Standalones around which the R10 is based."

That's exactly right. Confusion all around, not least of it mine. The original post did reference the "Tivo R10 model," and I'd been going on that all along.
I don't think you can hack the DTV-branded DVRs even if you did pull the PROM.
