We've worked for different sorts of non-profits then..

If you're a designer, in the long run, be sure to remain technologically current
and don't over-specialize.

I know several designers who are fading out of the field because they specialized
in one sliver of the print design field and never bothered to acquire interactive or
web-related skills.

Nuh-uh! I did, however, inhale a huge volume of rubber cement fumes in my day.

[quote jdc]what state are you in?

i just closed my design studio after 13 years -- started as freelancer but times were a lot better back then --

seems like here in CA, there are a thousand designers per square mile...
Where in CA? I'm here in SF and you can't throw a stone without hitting one. Hopefully not me though.

i think we are saying the same thing? how about 1000 designers per square foot?

im in sacramento and my full time job is based in walnut creek...

3 years ago when i posted a help wanted ad on CL for a entry level designer i ended up with 120+ resumes...

Re: Advice for Graphic Design Freelancing? - enrico7300 - 02-07-2008

Oh, I am totally agreeing. I didn't phrase it properly. I meant that the designer to normal human ratio is high in California, but is crazy-high in SF.

Sacramento to Walnut Creek sounds like a heck of a commute. I don't even like taking crosstown buses.

Without someone you know inside that will use you often, the best advice I have is:

• Learn to find deals on food in dented cans
• MREs can often be bought at Army Surplus
• C & K-Rations too
• McD & Burger Kind really DO throw wrapped food into the dumpsters every few hours
• SPAM - it's not just pig snouts and pig arseholes, it's good-eatin' too!
