I have an iPhone and text and voice mail are sometimes delayed and sometimes instantaneous. I blame it on gremlins. [not those ugly 70's cars - real gremlins!]

[quote NewtonMP2100]. . .when I had AT&T. . .I would get voicemail hours later and my phone would never have rung. . .this has not happened with any other carrier. . . That just happened to me this morning!

SMS is a "best effort" service.

If, for some reason it can send a message instantaneously, it might wait several hours for the SMSC to try again.

I don't text message at all. As stated earlier; I've got a phone in my hand, I'll just call. I've heard co-workers complain that it sometimes takes DAYS for text messages to arrive.

So far, I've never had a lost or late text message, e-mail, or instance where the call went to VM without ringing the 'Phone, that I know of. So I can have no complaints. That could change, sure, but for now-- yahoo!

I don't text much, but it's very handy. On a 'Phone, the message is there when it's woken up, right on the top screen. When I'm on the 'Phone the message is right there. No need to go to Voice Mail.

And if it's a short message, I can read the whole thing and dismiss it in a matter of a few seconds with only one click. Very handy.

On a 'Phone, a text message can be read as soon as it's received in instances were receiving or answering a call would be rude or imprudent.

I never bothered sending any or reading most text messages on other phones because it was a drag to go fetch 'em. On a 'Phone, it's a piece o' cake.

I probably check voice mail about once a week or so. Everyone has learned how to best contact me. That's either via email or text message. I don't need to call someone to tell them I'm on the way. Since we're not doctors on call, if something doesn't get through, just send it again. I've yet to find the person (non-immigrant) that's busier than I am.

sms is nice for some things. If urgency isn't high, it is nice not to have to bother someone with a call. sms is more like e-mail, which people also use instead of making phone calls. kj.

My sister has had terrible problems with Verizon's voicemail. She has gotten into the habit of checking her vmail several times a day because she has found she had new messages without having the cell phone ring or an indication of a missed call or message waiting. I have had instances of getting a message waiting indication without the phone ringing or a missed call on T-mobile as well. So, I don't think that it's a one carrier issue. The sad fact is that cellular service in this country stinks compared to many others.
