Yes. It will be a longer commute for me to his house. Gas will cost me more.

Are the computer and software yours or his?

I did some repair work for an advertising/design firm located from someone's basement. They had four or five employees, and it seemed to work out pretty well for all; it was a very large house, and the business used the walk-out basement. Seemed like a nice casual environment, but that would be hugely dependent on the boss.

Software and computer are his at the office.

However, I have an identical set up at home.

No way I would do that.

Since it is apparently important for HIM to save money . . . how about stressing that it is also important for YOU to save money . . . and for you to telecommute is the obvious solution . . .

What's happening with that person who works the front desk? Are they supposed to work from the house too?

I'd push for telecommute, and if forced to work from the boss's house, maybe start adopting some behavior of a house guest that you want to get rid of, start helping yourself to food from the fridge, stretch out on the couch with your feet up, have poor aim in the bathroom, etc. Then suggest telecommuting again.

If he's already a PITA, and it's bad enough working for him in his office, I can see only more negatives working for him in his home. You know, "my space" and all that goes along with it.

But I may be wrong. I guess it depends on what makes him a PITA.

If I were in this position, I'd be checking the jobs on Craig's list. I have a hard time being in anyone else's space (including significant others—back when i had them) for longer than a weekend.

If my boss proposed something like this, there would be no frickin' way... I'd quit before my first "work" day in his house.
