The power reset did the trick. I'm already at 10.4.11 so, Software Update shouldn't have mucked that up (should it?). I have done SU on iTunes, iPhone etc. I hope to be upgrading to a MBP very soon. When I sell the TiBook, I want everything to be working normally. Again, thanks to all who helped me solve this
