What's missing?
I made several of those in grade school. They worked fine... until the wood dried out and cracked and they fell apart.
There are some tweaks you can make to improve it. We used to add some pennies taped at one end to help press the second pencil to the paper.
BTW: You can cut the holes in the sticks with a good hole-punch.
