Dropped my iBook off yesterday. The guy confirms that the S/N falls within the range for which Apple still has the repair extension program going, and that they will ship it off to Apple as a result. Hopefully all goes well.
Never realized that the dreaded problem could show up so late in the life of the machine. Perhaps it depends on how often the machine is used.
