At 85, she could definitely be my grandmother, but are you sure a standard sedan is the right choice? Elmo3 makes a good point about higher seating. Even at my age, I found the Camry difficult to get into and out of, but I absolutely ADORE my Highlander, because the seat is higher but not too high; I can just kinda glide in and out. For an 85 year old, I'd think that aspect would be even more important than it is for me. Pay attention to visibility, too; some of the sedans have pretty big blind spots.

The XB would probably be a popular choice with the grandson who will be getting it in a few years. I am thinking about getting one myself next year to replace the old Ford Aerostar in the basement garage.

we were in this situation with my parents earlier this year. At first, we were looking at Buick LeSebre. However, given the car was discontinued, the dealer would not meet our price, so we walked away.
Along the way, we tried several different types of sedan, we ended up getting the Camry LE, with the side air bags option. My sister and I bargained pretty hard, and we got a pretty good deal. My dad has been very happy. We are happy because we got a car with good safety feature.
Now what's going happen to your mom in two years? She won't have a car anymore? I would think the criteria for getting a car for the teenager vs. some more senior is different. For your mom, I would try to find something that drives well, and has good safety features.
For you son, I would get a car that has good safety features as well, but probably a used a car, because there is a high chance that your son won't take care of the car that well.
What was your mom driving before?

I think the only place I might fall down on this equation is new. But damn, you can get a good one for $2000, and you can still afford to throw a couple of hundred at it if something breaks.

Glad to hear others would vote for a scion. Having done a little research into scion vs. toyota makes, I found that most scion's come with more standard features than a similar toyota, and end up costing less.
Personally have a thing for the tC, and the Matrix, but those are closer to the 20K price point.
Used is a great option too, how about a 2003+ corolla? Sporty enough to satisfy a teenager, and reliable.

Mom's previous car was a decades-old Plymouth K-car with (get this!) about 20K miles on it.
