I'm still guessing that the carrier settings file is corrupted. I don't know if this file is replaced when you do a firmware update/restore.

since the iPhone part was not active during the flight (was it?), it seems to indicate that it has nothing to do with the Network. It behaved more like an iPod Touch during the flight.

In spite of the warnings, I leave the iPhone running during flights and DO NOT turn on the "airplane mode."
Regardless, the iPhone exhibited no problems in Central America but the problems have resurfaced after returning to the United States.
