overheard in restaurant in Fla.
couple older ladies discussing.
one had just come back from a long stay in hospital with covid having not vax'd.
"lucky to be alive", she said to the doc. "I could have died."
To which he said. "You were dying."
Meets another anti-vax friend a few days after being out who said.
"you just a have weak immune system. I'll never get covid cause I'm in better shape and healthier."
The friend was dead from Covid 2 weeks later.
when reality stares one in the face and one still denies.

Another sad story, with a (only kinda) happy ending:
When the vaccines came along, Chris became outspoken against them, espousing views that were common in his workplace and much of Texas but that put him at odds with his mother, sister and the close friends he had grown up with… Despite his family’s pleading, Chris and Diana [his wife] were adamant they did not need to be vaccinated.
Chris felt that vaccine mandates infringed on personal liberties, a perspective promoted by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and other prominent Republicans…As he liked to say, “God gave us our immune system and we can fight the viruses with our own immune system.” Diana, meanwhile, was leery of anything that might hurt the developing baby she carried.
Now…he was in a hospital intensive care room…as his wife lay unconscious, hooked up to a tangle of machines keeping her alive. Diana was 20 weeks pregnant, and he had a decision to make.
If doctors delivered the baby now, they told him, she would have the best shot at surviving. But the baby was so premature that it would almost certainly die. If Chris waited, he could lose them both.
He couldn’t decide, so he watched as his wife deteriorated. They finally put her on ECMO, where they take blood out of your body to oxygenate it because your lungs don’t work anymore.
In the end: 51 days on ECMO. Diana suffered 3 strokes and one heart attack - known complications. Her child was born prematurely. But after 139 days in the hospital, and millions in medical care, incredibly both mom and baby survived.
She was still attached to an oxygen tank and had three tubes in her lungs to keep them inflated that were pretty painful… and she’s still weak on her left side because of the strokes.
More happy ending:
Most of their extended family who had resisted vaccines have now gotten them after learning of Diana’s ordeal…
…umm, kinda happy:
…but a few remained reluctant. In January, they got word that Gilbert, one of Diana’s favorite relatives on Chris’s side who was also unvaccinated, had covid… Shortly before Gilbert was put on a ventilator…Diana texted encouraging messages. “God is going to hug you very tight,”
He died in late January, and Diana cried all night.

Caught a story earlier today (not sure where maybe NPR) about a 16 year-old from a seriously anti-vaxx family who got himself across the state line to where he could get vaxxed.
Kid had the whole life ahead of him threatened by family ignorance; hope he lives long and prospers, at age 16 he deserves.

I'm not sure if this is behind the New York Times paywall since I have a subscription, but it has a lot of good information about Covid antivirals and how you can go about getting them if you get a positive test result:

First, you must test positive with a P.C.R. or rapid test. If you test positive at a participating location that dispenses antivirals and has an authorized medical provider, you can get a Covid-19 pill prescription (if eligible) and fill it on the spot. If you test positive at a different testing site or through an at-home testing kit, you can schedule an online or in-person visit with a provider at a “test to treat” location to get and fill a prescription as well.
And just like with other medications, your regular health care provider can call in a prescription to a pharmacy for you, said Kuldip Patel, the senior associate chief pharmacy officer at Duke University Hospital in North Carolina. A federal “test to treat” website, expected to go live soon, will include locations that test for the coronavirus and dispense antiviral treatments on the spot.

You left out the part about needing to be 12 and 40 kgs. My daughter who has a kidney transplant weighs a bit over 35 kgs, is cautioned to not gain weight and her tx center says she cannot receive these antivirals because she isn’t heavy enough. And, no, they won’t do partial doses because they are required to follow the manufacturer’s and FDA’s protocols. Fuck’em.

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter doesn't qualify. That is so disheartening. I hope she is able to stay safe and not get infected.
