Not a bad idea...

A good general purpose electronic muffs are the Peltor Tactical 6S. Ignore the "tactical" part - idiotic marketing gimmick. The 6S lasts me 1-2 years of heavy use. I'm on my third pair. If you use them a little more lightly, they'll last longer. They run about $60. WELL worth it.

Last year, I picked up a pair of Peltor Tactical Pro (again with the "tactical" bs...) muffs, and I love them! They're higher quality, easier to change batteries, and the amplifier is more sensitive. If you need more hearing protection, or wear them a LOT, and want higher quality, the Peltor Tactical Pro's are great. They run about $210.

With the electronic muffs, stay away from the uber-cheap ones! The electronics in some are really annoying (the recovery time after a loud noise before the amplifier kicks in is noticable, and annoying), and the noise reduction rating is LESS then on cheap disposable earplugs for some of the cheapie's.

For re-usable earplugs, the highest noise reduction rating I've found is the Silent Ear earplugs from www.earplugstore.com.
From the reviews, they fit some folks fine, and others not so much. They fit me OK.. I wear them under my "Muffs" as "backup" (at least in my right ear, which I'm trying to preserve as my "good ear"). I think they were about $12 a pair. Like I said, highest NRR I could find anywhere, and washable.

I'm not an audiologist, or any sort of expert... just a guy with "loud" hobbies that started noticing that I wasn't hearing so good no more, and stepped up my hearing protection game.

Hope this helps anyone looking for hearing protection.

Really? Muffs? Short for earmuffs?

Thanks Paul. I'll check some of these out.

I've been drinking coffee in large amounts since I was 12, and I have tinnitus. I guess this doesn't work for men.

Wrong. Tinnitus is caused by standing next to guitar players for 40 years.

What?

My permanent tinnitus was caused by a severe bilateral ear infection (that occurred when I was in my mid 30s).

I drink a lot of coffee but that has been a constant since before the tinnitus.

I have had a bad case since 1970 when I stood in front of the main speakers at a Grand Funk Railroad concert.
