So, two years on the last update. That is just too long. Maybe I will try to wait till the next update, since it has already been over a year, but I hope it doesn't stretch out to two years, like last time. Would have been better if the gap between the 2012 and the 2014 would have been longer....

The current mini has the 4xxx series CPU, the same generation as the 2015 MBP. Typically the mini won't get a new CPU until the new MBP (late 2015 or early 2016) has been out for six months.

actually I searched and it seems Apple did sell some i3 machines. not sure about Mac Mini, but here are some i3 iMacs.

now that I think about it, I think my friend has one i3. I never paid attention, and all my machines are i5 or i7.

The i3 iMacs were all education-only, typically with other cost-saving changes like non-Magic mouse and USB instead of BT keyboards bundled. These were replaced by the 1.4 (and now 1.6) i5 iMacs which are available to everyone.
