From my point of view, it's the whiners and complainers who create this problem - not the "so-called" offending posters. Stop whining and complaining and the whole thing becomes a non-issue.

I propose a "vote to close" feature on the political side.
If enough people VTC, then the thread will be closed to further comments. Might take a while to fine tune the threshold, but it could help shutdown threads that have become pissing matches between 2-3 posters.
Yeah, they could just open a new thread and continue, but I doubt it would happen that often. And some will complain about censorship and "Tyranny of the Majority" but this is a privately owned server and they can ask for a refund if they don't like it.

Or we could just all abandon pissing-contest threads and go someplace else. I fail to understand why two/three people can't hunker down in a thread and be nasty to each other as long as we can all walk off and leave them alone. Just stop looking at those threads and after a while people will learn not to make any further serious contributions to threads like that because nobody will be looking except the ones enjoying each others' bon mots. In fact, it might be good if they can go at each other on the same thread for weeks, thereby distracting them from bothering us elsewhere.
