Thanks for that link. We've done seven of those and didn't know about that list at the time. I've got to catch up!

Coast to Coast in under 29 hours: Mercedes CL driver sets new record by averaging 98mph in car he spent months fitting with gadgets to keep eye out for police

Don't drive tired.

One thing you'll notice driving thru the desert and corn country is the number of two wheeled tracks that slowly leave the freeeway going for a good quarter mile. Presumably on cruise control alone. With no trees you can go quite a distance and some too obviously have.

If you each drive a 2 ~ 3-hour stint, then have a rest/food/fuel break before your partner takes over, it would be possible to drive 12 or more hours each travel day. You'll be able to cover a LOT of miles on the Interstate Highway System this way without killing either of you. A MAJOR factor will be how comfortable the front seats are. I had a 1992 Ford Aerostar van that had Recaro captain's chairs as OEM equipment! Later, we had a 1999 Honda Odyssey (the first year with the sliding doors) where the fronts seats were NOWHERE near as comfortable. If, at the end of the day, you have backaches and soreness from crappy seats, it will NOT be a happy experience. Many car makers skimp on the seats they install. Long distance driving in such seats can be torture.

I don't understand the point of driving cross-country if you are going to zoom along and not see anything.

You need a truck, 1/2 ton full 4 door truck. Safer, most comfortable vehicle for a road trip.

I was thinking of a Jaguar LWB or Benz.

I was thinking of a '59 caddy. It's like a Winnebago but roomier.

I have done Raleigh NC to Sacramento, CA in 3 days.
3 days of sheer agony, miserable nonstop driving for 15 hours per day.
I would not drive more than 8 hours per day at this point in my life. I can't move after that long in the seat.
