Re: Has anyone here sold a car via Craig's List? - Mr645 - 07-17-2016 I solda car on Craigslist. Of course got a few scams, 2 fake checks mailed to me, not even sure of the sender contacted me. But I did find a real buyer, met him at his bank to view the car, he brought a mechanic, I brought in the title to his bank as he was getting a loan, the bank wrote two bank checks, one for $2000 and the gave that to me to go get the title transferred at the local tax office, we did, came back with the title and they handed me the second check and I went home and deposited the checks. You can do it on -line. That theoretically get's you off the hook if the buyer never transfer/registers it. I sold a car, and reported it. The buyer never transferred title, and a collections agency hired by the state tried to come after me for tickets, and the abandoned vehicle. I sent them a copy of the Report of Sale and asked why the state never checked their own database? I told them if they ever contacted me again, it was harassment. Never heard from them again. Here in MA the plates don't go with the car, so leaving them on is not an option except for in-family sales with a transfer of registration filed with the RMV. Title transfer is part of that process, so rarely are there issues with buyers not doing so and leaving a former owner on the hook. Same law is in effect here in CA. Way back in the '80s, I sold a motorcycle to a buddy, who never transferred the title. About six months later I received a notice from the city of L.A. regarding an unpaid parking ticket for the bike. I mailed back a copy of the Report of Sale and never heard another peep about the matter.
