I've been happy with what is now US Bank for (gads) nearly 30 years now. Started as my local "Star Bank" back when I lived in the 'Nati. No fee, no min balance checking.

....USAA........no minimum......they print checks for free [ many banks don't do this anymore ].....I link to basic savings locally......then you can transfer funds to USAA for free.....if you need to deposit cash or checks immediate.....you deposit at the local bank then just transfer.....

Huge fan of USAA Bank. I use them for everything. Instantly credit to your account deposits you make on app. $15/month reimbursements of other bank's ATM fees.

Actually, if you transfer funds from another bank they credit your USAA account immediately. I have a number of bank accounts. NONE of them do that ever.

My credit union started in 2020 (or was in 2019) charging $5/month fees... Kind of annoys me but I do get free checks once a year, free bill pay (which includes mailing payments) and some other bonuses so it's not a huge deal. Still sucks.

Shop around. my CU only requires that members maintain $5 in a savings account. No monthly fees. Generally a bit forgiving with overdrafts which my son is particularly thankful for. (He realizes that if he had an account with a monster mega bank he'd have paid many hundreds of dollars by now with his careless ways.) Don't know about free checks since I have no use for checks with this account but free bill pay including mailing, and an app that, among other functions, I can deposit checks.
