Side and front cameras were originally intended to assist with slow speed navigation, whether parking or squeezing through a tight area.

The requirements for side mirrors didn't contemplate technology advances. Just like adaptive lighting, which was adopted outside the US and is slowly becoming acceptable. The move to cameras replacing side mirrors will eventually happen. the cameras can be arranged to provide a far better view of one's surroundings and eliminate blindspots. Add in the fact that the cameras can be positioned in such a way to minimize aerodynamic impact and it could help with fuel efficiency (or EV range improvements).

Weren't passenger door side mirrors optional until sometime in the 1970s? Point being: we have it better! Still. My ideal:

What with the blockage of a clear view out? Rear passengers don't need no stinkin' headrests.

Well, they didn't even have the option in my '83 245.

And cost a hell of a lot more than a mirror when they need to be replaced. XX $$$$

They don't stick out as far so far less likely to get torn off or damaged.

Get rear ended (pretty common) and there goes your backup camera. (The thread is about rear view.)

So what.

It gets fixed along with all the other damaged kit.

Another angle on what view the rear window on that configuration may offer.
