hm, a linksys wrt54g will run a limited version of the software but it'll still provide the signal boost you're looking for.

I'm only finding WRT54G2 version at the big box stores - no confirmation on a hack

I have to run some errands so I might spot check for some old stock

I really don't need the wireless myself so I may just have her pick up a g router and see
if it works out of the box for her.it's not something I want to spend a lot of time on so if I
can get it to work - fine but if it doesn't she may just have to get her own service.

As I mentioned earlier - when we were testing I could see numerous secured networks and those
were physically farther away then my house so maybe a straight up g will work.

Thanks for the input all

If you're still following this thread:

On some machines, it works better to restrict transmission and reception to only one antenna (via software). That said, a bigger antenna can make a big difference.

Thanks for that additional info.

I'm not getting into any after market antenna or the like.

If I can throw the signal far enough with a wireless G or N I'll do it

It's for her convenience not mine. If we can get something off the shelf then I get a new router ... that I don't need.
She offered to leave it when she finishes class. She and her siblings (that live out of the area)
would like to have wireless when they visit their mom.
