I just question the need to change the substance of a law and tradition that had stood for centuries.

The current law apparently applies to straight hertosexual couples. I consider it "my" law. Make a new law to cover the needs of gays. Don't change mine.

They said the same thing about giving rights to African Americans and women.

How is this situation different?

Are you equating marriage with salvery or Jim Crow laws? Or saying that marriage is the same as depriving women of the vote?

The only thing you could possible perceive as "wrong" with the current definition is that it doesn't include some segment of society based on sexual preference. So, get another law that covers that segment but doesn't redefine my segment.

Sexual preference and sexual orientation are not the same thing.

A matter of semantics, Mikey and has no bearing on the discussion as far as I'm concerned.

You say those are the same and you are a teacher? Something there doesn't equate.

Sexual preference = My 'preference' is hertosexual

My sexual orientation. Female.

What's so hard about that?

No. I'm saying that there's a population in this country that's being denied equal protection under the law and like many corrective measures in the past some people who believe that "tradition" trumps all are going to have to lump it.

Part of being an American is dealing with such things as civil liberties getting in the way of their bigotry.

Get over yourself.

My sexual orientation is heterosexual.

With the rare over-attention to grooming, of course.

You really don't know the difference do you?

Honest-to-gosh, I never heard of a difference between the preference and orientation. I can understand a difference between preference and behavior, but not preference and orientation. I thought they were synonymous.
