Re: and the winner for Sec. of State is............ - kanesa - 11-24-2008 I agree, Stevie. Change is not about who you chose to be on your cabinet but what you do afterwards. You want to pick the best and the brightest and then bring change in how you do things. Re: and the winner for Sec. of State is............ - MacGurl - 11-24-2008 kanesa wrote: Absolutely! What did people expect, for Obama to pick a bunch of people for these positions with no experience what-so-ever? Totally wet behind the ears 24 year olds? I know I certainly don't want complete newbies serving in the cabinet. Kathy Re: and the winner for Sec. of State is............ - freeradical - 11-24-2008 MacGurl wrote: Huh? Maybe they lost the Liberty University graduation list? Re: and the winner for Sec. of State is............ - kanesa - 11-24-2008 freeradical wrote: Advancing from within is not always a good idea. These people would have their own enemies and detractors from within to contend with. New blood gives new vitality and direction. It's a wonder to me that any of these bureaucracies function at all with the constant changes at the top. I work for a state government and no matter who is at the top, Republican or Democrat, I just keep churning along and doing my job. I guess that is true of the federal government too. Re: and the winner for Sec. of State is............ - MacGurl - 11-24-2008 The impression I am getting, from some who are complaining about Obama's picks not being "changeful" enough, is that they wouldn't be happy with anyone coming from "within" or previous experience in DC - like they want such totally new people that none of us would have ever even heard their names before. That kind of "new" I can do without - I prefer some experience please. And if he had done that, the same people who are now criticizing his cabinet choices would be criticizing him for picking "totally new people." Typical no-win situation. Re: and the winner for Sec. of State is............ - lafinfil - 11-24-2008 Seriously - The Sec of State is arguably the top position in the cabinet and even more so with our current standing in the world. This is not an entry level position - especially now. I can't say I've evr been a huge Hillary fan but on the world stage of politics she is a rock star. She will need no introductions to anyone - period. She knows the players and has enough background both officially in the Senate and unofficially as a former first lady, that she will come out of the gate swinging. Obama has shown that he is not afraid to open up the government to folks that are not yes men (or women) Even the professionals on the right (not the talk monkeys) have said she is a good choice. Obama also gets the bonus of removing what could be his strongest democratic opponent in the Senate. I really believe that Obama wants to change the way things are done in Washington. I have never seen a president-elect invite his opponent to his transition headquarters. If someone else knows another presidential winner who did, please tell me. I think putting Clinton in his cabinet is genius. He is acknowledging her strengths and abilities and also appeasing all those Hillary backers still frustrated by her loss. I think she will be brilliant in this position. (Just an aside and tell me if I am wrong but if Senator Clinton becomes SoS and stays for 8 years, a woman will have been SoS for 24 years.) I think his change is about consensus and inclusion. His now famous logo includes the colors red and blue to indicate both red and blue states. He does want citizen input and participation. Check out the website. I truly hope that we will see things done differently in Washington. Thank you, you just basically totally enunciated my argument, and better than I would have. It was a brilliant maneuver on BO's part ... he simultaneously shows himself to be an inclusive leader, who recognizes talent when he sees it; as well as someone who cannily took an opponent, and made her into a coworker and collaborator. Both sides of the aisle-- regardless of how they view her politics-- know that she is an INCREDIBLY intelligent lady, and will be a real asset both to the administration and to this great nation. |
