Fwiw, Phoenix has been pretty much like this in all of his appearances lately. Casey Affleck is following him around filming a "documentary about his transition to music" leading some to believe it is all a Kaufman-like prank, including his "retirement from acting".

Some say he's just trying to be his real self. Others are just blaming drugs.

yeah, either it's "performance art" ala Andy Kaufman, or he has some real social anxiety disorder...

Acting or not it was hilarious.

I'm remembering the freak-out show that was the Letterman interview with Crispin Glover. I don't think 'ol Crispin has been back on Letterman since then either.

Watching it a second time- it really seems like the best acting I have ever seen.

Nutty! Stoned is my guess...

His heavy breaths, as if he is really trying to concentrate on breathing indicates to me that he may be on something. I would not think so if that was not evident.

Letterman used to be a real ass.

He thought he was real clever and *always* smarter than most of his guests. When he grew up, people started hating him.

As a grownup, he doesn't trash people who don't deserve it. That cost him viewers, but that's a choice he's made and apparently happy with.

Joaquin was obviously screwed up, in mind and body. The "old" Dave would have reamed him mercilessly, probably more so after learning that Joaquin has a budding hip-hop career along with his ZZ Top obsession. (I don't think Dave has anything against ZZ Top.) Actually, I think the "old" Dave would have started in on the sunglasses and not let up.

Even so, Dave tried to make the interview work several times before giving up on him.

I was surprised that he actually got a laugh out of Phoenix at the end.

"You're a funny dude."

This is when he first announced he was retiring.

Casey's bit at the end seems suspicious.

He actually looked hurt when Dave said he wouldn't be playing music on the show.
