My point in wondering why the inability of the driver to shut down the engine isn't being addressed is that I'd think there would be a large hue and cry for an emergency shutoff if that was an issue. Making the gas pedal shorter is all well and good but the bottom line is that if the driver had been able to turn off the ignition, he most likely wouldn't have killed himself and three others. I'd expect that issue to be discussed with as much importance as the stuck throttle but for some reason, from what I've read, it is being ignored.

I don't *know* if it is possible, but I do know that the shifter gate design on that particular vehicle has been cited as a potential obstacle were one to attempt to do so.

"In addition, as a separate measure independent of the vehicle-based remedy, Toyota will install a brake override system onto the involved Camry, Avalon, and Lexus ES 350, IS350 and IS 250 models as an extra measure of confidence. This system cuts engine power in case of simultaneous application of both the accelerator and brake pedals."
Sounds like a common sense approach for a variety panic acceleration situations. This is in addition to rejiggering the gas pedal placement and floor mat anchoring.
I'd like to see it retrofitted into more models, including my car as well, but it's not on the list.
