I guess you don't get out much space-time. Shootings of police, and numerous other government officials are very common in many other countries. So common that, such events are not very newsworthy.

Almost 30 years ago, when on vacation on the island of Jamaica, I was surprised that local police often were armed with true assault weapons. All the better resort properties had a corps of armed security.

That fact that so many Americans own firearms is a strong deterrent in many ways.
