The black triangle just marks the current position in the timeline. It sits above the timeline.
The white brackets sit below the timeline and start out on the far left side. They sometimes fade out of view, but should appear if you nudge the black triangle a bit.

Don't know what format the TiVo recording is but I'd be curious if MPEG Strramclip could deal with it. If it's an MPEG2 recording you'll be out of luck unless you also buy and install Apple's $20 MPEG2 plugin. http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html

Streamclip is worth a try. Worst comes to worst, and if you can find a copy, VisualHub with the video set to passthrough would transcode the audio track to something more QT-friendly.

I've got VH. What setting should I use (MP4, MPEG, etc.) and how do I set the video to passthrough?

Try Streamclip first. It's a free app. If it plays, you can trim it right there and export the file in a variety of formats.
For VisualHub:
Click the "Advanced" button to bring up the custom settings window. In the video section look at the popup menu for Extra FFmpeg Flags. In there put -vcodec copy (or choose the passthrough setting from the popup)
As for which overall preset to use for editing later in Quicktime, probably MPEG (checkmark MPEG2). Dunno if also selecting one of the profiles would help. You may be in for some experimentation here.
OR
You might just take your original recording at toss it into Handbrake. The resulting H.264 and later work by QT will all take longer this way and create an additional transcode but if VH craps out on you, you might not have too many other choices …

Yeah, worked fine with VLC. I even burned a DVD of the entire broadcast with Toast Titanium and that worked fine. Just seems to be a problem with QT.
I'm at work, but will try to remote in to my Mac at home and d/l, install Perian and see if that fixes it.
Yeah, based on that, I'll bet you the audio track is AC3. Quicktime doesn't have a built-in plugin for AC3 audio (although it plays find in DVD Player and iTunes movies); Perian should take care of it.
Yes, it is AC3.

Never could get those brackets to show up.

Streamclip couldn't handle it for some reason (in terms of the trimming...would keep on freezing).
In the end, VH did the trick. Followed the instruction to passthrough the video and it converted pretty quickly. Audio is now working in QT! Was able to trim it in QT and am currently uploading it to YouTube.

:-( Spoke too soon: no audio on the YouTube clip for some reason even though the audio is there in Quicktime.

Export the clip with AAC audio. There's good advice here:
