I still believe I could rip all of our DVD collection, load them on iTunes to the current AppleTV and I would be set. That
would be so cool to be able to instantly pull up one of about 300 or 400 movies at will.

So why haven't you?

Assuming you run all your movies through Handbrake, set the size to 1GB each and have a mirrored backup, you could have everything ripped to a 1TB drive with room to grow.

I would suggest using Plex in place of Front Row and searching in FR sucks once you get past 75-100 files.

I would also sugguest getting a metadata editor to use on your ripped files. I use MetaX and it only takes a few minutes to place all the needed info for plex or FR to read.

It really is nice to have everything ripped.

I wholeheartedly agree. My daughter was probably close to 4 before she even saw a physical DVD. She was SO excited about putting it in and taking it out of the PS3.

I just got a 55" LG Smart TV with passive 3D so no, I won't be in the market for a "true" Apple TV this year. The "Smart" functions of the LG (love the Amazon prime free streaming) plus an attached Mac mini leads me to believe I'm set for at least a few years...the "magic wand" remote is pretty cool too Big Grin

There has to be something more groundbreaking about it than that.
At the very least a whole new way of interfacing with the controls. A quasi-touch screen that you use some sort of pointer with a-la Wii?

My guess, as others have said, would be Siri based technology to control the beast. What could be simpler than making commands with a robust, voice activated system? That, along with your choice of a-la-carte channels would be the game changer, IMO. Please, please, give us a choice of what channels we want to pay for!

Apple will not cater to the average mom and pop, the grandparent, the less tech savvy.

I disagree. I think that's exactly a segment of the market Apple will be seeking.

Apple has had always catered to the premium end of the electronics industry, but the people who buy at that end are already pretty tech savvy.

Fixed. Apple has been opening their ranks more and more to the consumer and ignoring the Pro to some degree. They may make up for that eventually, but not at the expense of 90% of the buying public.

The average joe, the one who's TV's are set to basic settings, who don't understand the awful TV UI, buy the low-end TV's, they don't have the money or see the value of the premium brands.

There's some truth in that, but I think the brush you paint with is far too wide. There are still people who use a plain-vanilla cellphone that aren't very tech savvy. But even so, there are a *lot* of iPhones and other smart phones out there being used by people who never would have bought such a phone because of the awful UI, and "Why would I want to talk to the Innerwebs anyway?" mentality. The 'Phones started out pricey, and only those willing to spend a shiny penny dared ventured there. Now a lot of people have them, on the cheap, and not just kids and tech-types.

I have no idea what the Apple TV would/will be like. It would have to be more than just cool styling. More than just content. More than just someone in a program telling you "Enough with the laser pointer already!"

I could see Siri being a huge feature. "Siri, when is Bones on?" "Siri, any dramas on at 9:00 tomorrow?" "Record the next House and Royal Pains for me, and every episode of Castle. "And record the next Raiders game, but keep it only if they win." Siri, are there any shows with gratuitous TnA on this week?" "Siri, while we're on vacation, turn the set on at random times so nobody knows we're gone."

Whatever Apple does, if they do it, there will be a couple or three big features that will have a sum greater than total of the individual parts.

Or it won't sell.

I was at Costco today looking at a 70 Vizio LED/LCD set. I'm wanting plasma, but even at $2500, the Vizio was pretty compelling.

I'll wait to see what Apple has wrought, before I buy anything.

Oh, and... - RAMd®d - 01-09-2012

Yeah, I know-- that *is* a lot of set for the money, considering prices just a couple of years ago.

I just got a tv hooked up to Comcast's doohickie... blah, blah, blah

Really? That's what you're going with?

More than a fews people would look at a Comcast whatever or a Roku and say "HUH?!" "WHAT Tab A, WHAT Slot B??" let alone know about Plex and where to find it. Let's not pretend that if something had gone awry with your installs, the first thing you'd do is call India for some hand holding. Let's own up to the fact that your familiarity with tech gear, limited as it may be (doohickie, whatzit) would be enough for you to try to figure it out and maybe even ask questions here or Google for info, before gnashing of teeth and uncontrollable wailing set in.

Comcast modems may just about be a household phrase, but WDS, Netflix and Hulu on TV, and TV menus are still Greek to a lot of folks. I can't tell you how many TVs I've scene in the homes of friends with the picture still at Pop! setting used in store demos, and maybe with just a liiiiitle too much orange in the skin tones. Yeah, there are consumers that are more TV tech savvy, but I don't think they're a significant percentage of the viewing audience.

I think *most* people in the market for a TV today just don't realize what they should know about TVs before they go shopping and are susceptible to information overload and slick sales people. Of course we can laugh at them because we're so much smarter and superior.

If there is an Apple TV (and not an AppleTV) and it does for TVs and TV viewing what the iPod and iPad did for music and tablet computing, I'm in.

Currently, for me, HDTV is 720p (and occasionally 1080p) video served up on my mini and LED ACD. I'd like 1080p on a 42-46" screen, to start. Then I could off my CRT Sony and DTA converter.

So yeah, I'm interested in what this might be, if it ever is.

But it's way too soon for me to take the shot.

Boy, I wouldn't even "have" a HD Tv if you hadn't convinced me to get one.
