Lately, I've been living it up. My wife got me an "Art of Shaving" kit, with which I 1) apply shaving oil, then 2), apply suds the old fashioned way with a badger-hair brush, and then 3) shave with a Harry's 5 blade razor. All in the shower after getting my face warmed up and wetted for a couple of minutes. After the shower, I apply Art of Shaving aftershave cream.

And the truth is, my face is a lot happier than the many years I just soaped up with the bar of whatever was in the shower that day. Of it all, I think the pre-oil probably helps the most - the rest may just be fluff.

You can usually find good deals on the starter kits, but here's the sites if you're interested:

I use a blade on Sunday and electric the rest of the week, no problem for me.

Lot 4-12 count Men's Schick ST2 Slim Twin Sensitive Disposable Razors ST 2 (48)= $18 free ship on ebay (37 cents a piece.)

After showering. Rinse. Regular old shave cream. Each one lasts minimum 1 month. Great shave.

Fancy fad shavers and profit center units are laughable.

I haven't ever been happy with my (about a year old) electric shaver and so got out a fresh Sensor Excell disposable from the drawer and some new foam shave cream.

First day was perfect but by Day 2, certainly Day 3 it's no better than using the electric and really drags now, with red marks on my neck. I thought I used to get at least 3 good shaves? I did the "arm shrop" wiping the blade on my arm afterwards each time.

You aren't doing a "cold shave" are you? I mean, you're rinsing your face and neck with warm water or shaving during or immediately after a hot shower to soften the hair first, right?

As others have suggested, shaving gels seem to do a better job than shaving creams. I suggest that you try a gel.

Also, if your skin is sensitive you should try a triple-blade razor with a "lubricating" strip. The extra blade seems gimmicky, but really improves the shave.

The blades in an electric shaver need to be changed every 6 months to a year. I would switch the blades in the electric shaver - I'm never going back to manual razor.

Chak- yes I probably "cut" a few corners as it were but nothing too egregious compared to how I used to do it. Today I picked up some Nivia gel and packed a new disposable 3-blade Schick Something. I'm now camping, er, Airstreaming until Monday.

You mentioned the lube strip. That's one thing I liked about the 2-blade Sensor Excell with disposable heads.

I like the idea of a shower mirror or of shaving immediately after. However, my M-F daddy sked benefits from an evening shower because as soon as I awake I'm up I'm moving whereas a morning shower typically slows me down. I may switch back to a morning shower come winter and low outdoor humidity ...
