Re: Patriot's turning a rout into a.. - Acer - 02-06-2017 The Falcons defense burned out early. They were an unstoppable onslaught in the first quarter. The signs started to stack up with the sequential third down holding calls in the series in the second quarter. Defenders getting tired get grabby. They avoided the score with the pick 6, but they had to stay on the field for that many more downs. It only got worse in the second half when they found themselves on their heels with the patriot's classic dink and dunk. Not sure there was much that could be done at that point. Seattle had Lynch, the biggest baddest RB at the time. Falcons had Freeman, top 5 RB in the NFL. WHY ARE YOU THROWING THE BALL? Even if Atlanta got stuffed and gained nothing, they still could have punted and caused the Pats to drive over 60 yards to score. Instead they fumble and give an extremely short field. What the heck? I never have a problem with a coach playing to win. There are far more examples of teams losing when they are ahead and afraid to make a play. If memory serves me, the Patriots threw a fade on first and goal at the end of regulation to Bennett, the Atlanta defender had inside position and could have made the pick. So the Pats could have lost this game by throwing on first goal just like Seattle. The Pats would have turned the ball over but the ensuing touchback would have required the Falcons to make something of the turnover. The Falcons fumble gave the Pats 2 things they needed, a quick score on a shorts field, little time taken off the clock. Running for 1 yard would have been winning strategy. Get the first down, burn some clock, make progress. Get a field goal and the game would have been out of reach. I also was not rooting for either team. You have two top RB and need one yard, Run the stupid ball. Ask the Seahawks 2 SB ago. The Cowboys decided to throw against the Packers when they needed one yard. The threw it incomplete, kicked the FG, and left time for Packers to beat them. Had they run the ball with Elliott they would have gotten the first down and run off more lock before kicking the FG. Had they not gotten the first down, they still would have run more time off the clock on a run attempt instead of the clock stopping when the pas hit the ground. Atlanta's defense was gassed in the 4th quarter. That is why you run for that one yard. You get the field goal. Even if you miss the defense is off the field for a bit longer. You could tell on the Pats last drive in OT that they had the legs and Atlanta didn't. Re: Patriot's turning a rout into a.. - btfc - 02-06-2017 Acer wrote: That's what I think too. After the Patriots' fumble, their defense were on the field for much of the time, and appeared to be tiring themselves. The Pats long drive before halftime seemed to start to turn that around, and the Pats long drives in the third quarter took a lot out of Atlanta's D. Re: Patriot's turning a rout into a.. - wurm - 02-07-2017 That pick-six didn't help, as the defense had to right back out again. They were just plain wiped out by the fourth quarter. I have to admit as a Patriots' fan, I had already resigned myself to the fact that it wasn't to be after we were down 21-0, then 28-3. Hell, I should be used to it and even I didn't believe they could turn it around like that. (Not complaining, though.) |
