Re: Bias in the Press - Mark Halperin of Time - Dennis S - 11-24-2008 There was no media bias for Obama. You wingnut whackos see media bias everywhere, like you see commies under the beds. You are getting boring. Re: Bias in the Press - Mark Halperin of Time - Black Landlord - 11-24-2008 Dennis S wrote: Are you sure you meant to say that? I would absolutely agree with Halperin's basic premise that media objectivity is at an all time low (although a valid argument could be made that it never really existed except as an abstract ideal). And I would agree that there was media bias for Obama. And for McCain. And against McCain. And against Obama. Etc. etc. But was there some sort of widespread, concerted media bias towards Obama during the last election cycle? If there was, the portion of the article I quoted above addresses it better than I could. Re: Bias in the Press - Mark Halperin of Time - Dennis S - 11-24-2008 I meant on the whole, h'. If it seemed like bias, it was because he was a better candidate with better ideas. It's a bunch of pundits - paid to be biased - spouting of bull$hit 24/7. I mean, hiring Karl freaking Rove as an analyst? james Carville? I don't freaking care what these people have to say. The media loves sensationalism and will do anything to create it. One of the best ways is to put people on the air who have differing / extreme opinions and let them go at it. They don't want reasonable people on the air...to our brain-dead pacified society, these people are too boring......they want the news to be more like WWF. The media caters to the lowest common denominator...you want some decent reporting, try watching Frontline regularly or rent some documentaries or read independent journalists that live in the regions they are reporting on. the media outlets have *some* of these people, but they are few and far between... kiva Re: Bias in the Press - Mark Halperin of Time - Lux Interior - 11-24-2008 Good thing I didn't vote for Michelle Obama! Re: Bias in the Press - Mark Halperin of Time - vision63 - 11-24-2008 Obama covered his butt. To the extent that the media really didn't have anything "other" than fairly good things to say about him. The bad: 1. Muslim terrorist. Propagated by pure unadulterated buzzard puke (racists). Nothing. 2. Wayward Preacher. Much ado about nothing. Really nothing at all. 3. Rezko. Untimely and coincidental set of circumstances. Nothing. 4. Michelle. First time being proud America. Like America is perfect. It can still be way better. Basically, nothing. 5. Clinging to guns. Nothing. 6. Ayers. Nothing. Stretched to the hilt bs. All of this is debatable by those that would debate it, but whatever. No lying. No cheating. No stealing. No embezzling. No harlots, trollops or vamps. Can't jam him up about the war or anything. So it all looks pretty positive. The media was clearly hoping that Hillary would rally like she did towards the end of the primaries and hoped that there would be drama at the Convention, which there was. Beyond that, McCain had nothing on him. Re: Bias in the Press - Mark Halperin of Time - Gutenberg - 11-24-2008 This may sound odd coming from someone in the news business, but here goes: We don't need 24-hour news service every day. What we need is time to sleep on it. In ordinary circumstances we need the morning news, the evening news and C-Span, not a bunch of people beating their gums about something they haven't had time to wrap their minds around, or worse, blowing a small event out of all proportion. For news like Election Night or tragedies like the bombing of the World Trade Center, by all means keep going. But most of the time, give us a test pattern. Spare us all the manufactured news like the latest pretty blonde to disappear, or Terri Schiavo, or Wars on Christmas. With the slow death of many newspapers around the country, from the local town rag to the large, urban/national dailies, the art of journalism may already be showing signs of an early demise. If, after all, one cannot cut one's chops at the local and regional level, how can there be improvement? |
