I hit a pothole a couple weeks ago amd bent the wheel. The tire was fine - no amount of fix-a-flat would have been helpful. I have a half-width but full height spare that rode as well as a full sized tire, but requires 50mph max for 50 miles max. Still, I was able to change it and keep going. A can of fix-a-flat in place of a spare is ludicrous.

My last car had a spare identical to the other four tires — but a pothole blew out 2 tires and bent both wheels , so I was stuck anyway.

Stock VW wheels are weak, and expensive to fix or replace.

FYI you can buy a can of Fix-a-Flat for $8-$9 at many department stores. I would guess Chevy charges more for there brand.

Fix-a-Flat used to work reasonably well on small holes but some years back they changed the formula, I'd assume going from VOC-based to water-based, and it hasn't worked worth a flip since. Except under absolutely ideal circumstances, about the most Fix-a-Flat will do now is show you where the hole is as it leaks out.

Tire Slime is vastly superior to current Fix-a-Flat and works even better than original formula Fix-a-Flat did.

Was there a mess inside the flat tire where the goop stuck to the wheel. Did Costco have to clean that all up? I could imagine that the slime that adhered to the wheel could cause problems trying to balance the wheel.

Balancing isn't the problem. If the Fix-a-Flat hasn't set up yet then it's no problem at all and will wipe off with a rag because straight out of the can it has the consistency and color of liquid coffee creamer, a little bit thicker and slimier than whole milk. If it has set up properly, which the current formulation rarely does, then all the chunky bits (it looks like fine-grained cottage cheese when it sets up) will have to be manually scraped from the inside of the rim so that none of it gets stuck between the tire and the rim during mounting and the new tire can seal properly. Original formula Fix-a-Flat just peeled off exactly like a layer of latex paint on top of oil-based paint: The less time it had been there, the easier it was to peel off and sometimes all of it would peel off in one piece if you were careful.

Does it still say on the can to warn your tire tech if you've used fix-a-flat? It used to, maybe for the explosive volatiles or just the mess, not sure.

I think it does because the fumes are still noxious even if they're no longer potentially explosive.

Fix-a-Flat, Tire Slime, and similar products had a reputation for messing up early TPMS sensors. I don't know if such products have ill effects on later model sensors or not, but since Chevrolet includes it on Volts I'm guessing not.

Original Fix A Flat used propane as the propellant, and the solvent the fix a flat was made of was flammable.

I worked for the company who created Fix A Flat. Originally it was supposed to be a roof sealing compound for aluminum roofs on mobile homes and RVs. So the solvent didn't matter. Didn't work well for that, but someone came up with the idea to fill tires with it.

So who here has changed a tire with the silly A$$ lug wrench provided.

Talk about cardio.

Go ahead and try to break one of those lug nuts loose next time you wash your car.

Call someone.

I agree, even if the spare is an option, it should be available. The last flat I had was in a year old Lexus SUV. I pulled over and called roadside service, after about 5 minutes on hold I gave them my location and was told about 45 minutes and the driver would call me before arriving to let me know the color, make and model of the vehicle coming to road side assist me.
After about 40 minute they called, letting me know the white pick up truck was about 20 minutes away, I thanked them but told them I had put on the spare and left the scene about ten minutes ago.

My Cadillac has a spare but my new BMW has run flats and no spare. Run flats, that's a different topic all together

I've used the supplied lug wrench with the last three cars I have owned. But then I weigh over 200 lbs and have always been in a location where I could use that weight on the wrench to break free the nut.

The bigger problem lately is that car makers have moved almost exclusively to hub centered wheels. Getting the wheel off when it is frozen to the hub can be a problem. Last time I changed the tires two of the four came of easily enough, the third took using a hammer, and the fourth needed penetrating oil on where the wheel connected to the hub.

Calisthenics. I had to jump up and down on the lug wrench provided, to shift the lug nuts.
