Ya know, I'll bet it's more likely that somebody got the brand or technology wrong somewhere along the line, rather than somebody getting ripped off.
Just a guess, I could be wrong.

I've got a single Panasonic 20" CRT television that is perhaps 12+ years old.
I've got other technology priorities. I might get an LCD telly to replace it this spring,
but frankly, I don't need reasons to watch more television.

The only HDTV is from the eyeTV hybrid attached to the Mac mini & viewed on a Dell 20" wide screen LDC monitor.

27" JVC CRT in the living room.
23" Hannspree NBA-themed LCD in the bedroom.
12" JVC CRT at the Office.
Been thinking about a Sharp 1080p LCD, but I still enjoy the JVC CRT, since I mostly watch old 4:3 TV show content on DVD.

32" Envision LCD HDTV in living room
20" Samsung CRT in one bedroom
27" Samusng CRT in master bedroom
I'm planning on getting rid of the 27" CRT sometime soon and replacing it with the 32" LCD from the living room. The living room of course will get upgraded to a 42" flippin' sweet plasma or 120hz LCD eventually.
Once you go HD, it's hard to watch regular channels.

32" non-HD TV
Mainly watching movies. But it is true - once you get used to HD, it is a pain to go back.

I've seen those sets and they don't have a very good picture, I can see why you didn't see much diffference ;-)
TWC just tacked on A&E, Versus/Golf, MTV and TBS in HD.
