[quote Silencio]If I break down and buy a HiDef LCD panel, that will have a very expensive cascade effect on my DirecTV subscription, my DVR, stereo receiver, and on and on and on. I have better things to spend money on -- er, I mean save/invest -- at the moment.
Not really. I have an HDTV but I don't get an HDTV signal. However, there still are many advantages to having the HDTV. If it's a good one, it will have a high quality deinterlacing and line doubling ability, which will significantly improve the picture quality from your DVR or DirectTV box.

More importantly, if you get (or already have) a quality progressive DVD player, the noninterlaced picture you will get will come close to the quality of a regular HDTV signal. If it's an upscaling player (e.g. Oppo) then you might get an even better picture if your TV doesn't do good upscaling. In addition, HD DVD players have plummeted in price. The Toshiba A2 can be had for around $200 and includes 5 free movies. The HD DVD format may "lose" to Blu Ray format, but it doesn't matter too much since the A2 is a great regular upscaling DVD player anyway.

Tony Gerela, who lives in the apartment directly below Green's and occasionally chats with the 37-year-old by the mailboxes, is well aware of his neighbor's disdain for television.

"About a week after I met him, we were talking, and I made some kind of Simpsons reference," Gerela said. "He asked me what I was talking about, and when I told him it was from a TV show, he just went off, saying how the last show he watched was some episode of Cheers, and even then, he could only watch for about two minutes before having to shut it off because it insulted his intelligence so terribly."

That's pretty good. Insulted his intelligence, jeez.

I don't have a fax machine, wine cellar or clothes dryer and I believe this is the first time I've
ever told anyone, maybe I start telling everyone that I don't have any of these items.

Don't have an HDTV...
Won't bother until the DirecTV HD-DVR doesn't suck so bad, or there is some way to keep my DirecTV Tivo (and there isn't...).

Until then... my 24" Phillips CRT will be fine.

Although... I have my eye on a nice 30-something inch LCD at Costco..
Maybe come the christmas season when the big sales are on...

I had a feeling that more than a few of us hadn't gone HDTV yet. Peter B is on point, with when, and what will trigger the decision to go HD. I've had the same thought as others have expressed, that there have got to be a [*insert descriptor here*]- load of otherwise-working-well CRT TV's in people's hands, that would be content to keep using them until they stop working. The whole HDTV thing doesn't appear to be well thought out, given the sheer numbers of still-working regular TV's. It will be interesting to see what shakes out in the video world over the next few years...

The correct grammatical title line would be "Who doesn't have AN HDTV". Just say it to yourself and you will seed it.

Just want to make a small correction. The government did not mandate HDTV, they mandated DTV. A station has the option to broadcast high definition or standard definition. The signal needs to be digital, not analog.

Stations that choose to broadcast standard definition can actually broadcast 4-6 channels, so they can become their own little "cable" outfit. Some stations (like mine) do high def and upconvert standard def to high def. Most daytime programming is standard definition, the prime time evening broadcasts and sports are usually the only high-def programming.

Your CRT's will not become useless. Cable HAS to support analog until 2012. You will be able to buy converter boxes for all the analog sets to get the OTA (over-the-air) DTV. Any high--def. signals will get downconverted to standard def in the converter box, and the digital signal will get converted to anaolg. In essence, your CRT becomes just a monitor.

About the same here - two 27" CRT TVs, cable is $8/month for 15 "basic" channels

Lifetime Tivo (300 hours) on one TV, lifetime Replay (250 hours) on the other.

With Amazon Unbox on the Tivo, I can subscribe (no commercials!) to whatever shows I miss for much less than moving to the "standard" $60/month 75-channel analog cable tier.

E.g. "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" now on USA network costs me $1.89/episode.
(new episodes are pushed down to my Tivo early the next morning)

Doing the above keeps my total bill for cable, broadband internet, and landline telephone under $50/month.

I've played with HD (EyeTV Hybrid + indoor powered antenna), and can replace most of the channels on my cable package OTA, but it's just not worth it to me yet.

[quote will2000]We have a 32" Panasonic CRT with dual tuner TIVO and limited Comcast. (The $15/mo package)
HDTV is not very high on the budget priority list.

1-32" Toshiba CRT vintage 2003
When I purchased it I almost opted for HD LCD, but found out that Comcast was only broadcasting 6 HD channels.

Everytime I visit my brother and watch his Samsung 32" HD wide screen, I have HD LCD envy! But he too bitches about Comcast not broadcasting in that many HD channels.

He talks of selling his north facing townhouse and buying a south facing one just so he can get a dish!
