Why not? I like the mini/micro plugs for USB...... - Jimmypoo - 07-28-2010

.... so why can't we use them on both ends? There isn't much current flowing through this stuff -- and if
it can power a 2.5 disk via the little end, it can pick it up via the little end as well.

Why not use them instead of the current USB male/female ports??

EE's or computer EXPERTS (some guesses allowed... but state it as so) - PETRO? Any reason via your post?

How about Dick Moore - what does the Instrumentation Expert have to say about this?

USB is master/slave, so having the same connector on both ends could cause trouble as in connecting 2 slaves together or 2 masters together.

Maybe what you really want is a mini or micro USB A connector.

I have mini-a and micro B around -- with Type A on one end.

I also, though I don't know why I got them, micro B to Type B. Perhaps for direct connect to printer?

I have them, but I've not tried them. Such is the beast that 80 cents and MonoPrice can be.

On a somewhat related note, I have always been a proponent of everything having a mini-USB connector. It would make life much easier.

Agreed. I can understand FW being bigger to power bigger items, but USB can't even handle a keyboard
and mouse at times. A bunch of little dudes with a better board behind them would be nice.

I personally am not crazy about teensy little contacts for anything, especially anything carrying a half amp at 5 volts, but if it works for ya, then go for it. I have several pieces of detritus floating around that use the mini and micro USB connectors in several variations of their shapes, but none of the things I have draw any power to speak of. Technically speaking, 24 gauge wire or its equivalent of copper board trace will cary a half amp OK -- it's the reliability of the contact wiping areas that I worry about -- how many cycles of insertion on those beentsy little thangs before they short out or wear through?

You know connectors for things are like oil filters for vehicles -- the whole world could get by fine with three or four types, but those dang engineers are just sure they have a special need or a better idea and then we end up needing things we can't get or pieces that don't mate. I give you the example of cell phone power connectors. BAH.
