Need help with leaky faucet - volcs0 - 09-12-2010 I've never had trouble replacing the washers on a leaky faucet, but I can't figure out how to get this one apart. Am I supposed to be able to pull up on the stem to pull out the cartridge? Am I supposed to be able to turn the whole metal part? Because it appears that is never going to turn. Anyway, before I destroy the thing, what is the next step here to getting out the cartridge? I've googled, and they either say to "unscrew the packing nut" or "pull and remove the stem." ![]() Re: Need help with leaky faucet - Carm - 09-12-2010 Turn big brass thingamabob. Looks like your faucet has seen better days. ![]() Joe Re: Need help with leaky faucet - volcs0 - 09-12-2010 Yeah, actually, I'm showing you the "good" side. The big brass thingamabob didn't take to turning too well. It is now bent and stripped... Time for a new faucet? Re: Need help with leaky faucet - btfc - 09-12-2010 Turn that big nut. Use penetrating oil if necessary. The whole brass thing comes out together. Re: Need help with leaky faucet - Carm - 09-12-2010 Yup time for a new faucet. Dem faucets are made to be disposible.
![]() This is what I replaced my shiny chrome faucets with in my sons bathroom. Notice the toothpaste and calcium deposits. Hard water does a number on faucets. Also my son hasnt cleaned his restroom yet.
Re: Need help with leaky faucet - LyleH - 09-12-2010 It looks like the big nut and the cylinder below it are one part. You may have to resort to using visegrips on the cylinder to try to turn it. Or use a hex socket set on the nut and the visegrips at the same time. Hope you have a replacement part for that. Good Luck.... If you mar the cylinder you can always get rid of the burrs with a file. LyleH Re: Need help with leaky faucet - GGD - 09-13-2010 Knowing what the replacement part looks like might help in understanding how it comes apart. That nut and brass cylinder are one piece, and it screws into that bottom piece where you see that seam very close to the fixture. ![]() Re: Need help with leaky faucet - Plumbking - 09-13-2010 some stems turn opposite direction. try clockwise Re: Need help with leaky faucet - volcs0 - 09-13-2010 Thanks everyone. I tried both directions. I ended up bending the heck out of that thing while trying to turn it with vice grips - I think I'm going to have to replace the faucet... Thanks for all the advice. At least I wasn't going nuts missing something obvious about taking it apart... Re: Need help with leaky faucet - Plumbking - 09-13-2010 In the future don't use vice grips on anything plumbing. That stem should be removed with a 8" crescent wrench. |
