Post title largely says it all, but here's some more info:
1) I had a font, "Female and Male Symbols" which has these symbols, but doesn't seem to be working properly with OS 10.6.x and Word versions 2008 or 2004 (but does work marginally with Word v.X) ... it was working semi-OK under OS 10.5.x
2) When I try to put Female and Male Symbols into Font Book, it acts as if it's working, but the font doesn't actually show up
3) There's another font, Marvosym, that seems to have the right symbols, but they don't show up if you try to put them in MS Word
4) Of course, free is good...

Hi Monster,
That second one is the same one I was talking about ... I can't get it to install into Font Book, and yet it does seem to show up in the menu for MS Word v.X but NOT Word 2004 or 2008.

Can't you just use the word "FREAK!" where appropriate?

Since PeterB is probably preparing materials for a course in genetics, the word "freak" would be insufficiently technical.
Besides, those hermaphroditic nematodes probably think WE'RE the freaks. Not to mention all those sybaritic fungi that have a gazillion different mating types.

Errrr... bringing it back on track, anybody have a good solution to this problem, other than my downgrading back to 10.5.x for the sake of one friggin' font?
