RROD what should I do? - Plumbking - 09-13-2010

Just got back from camping with the Boy Scouts and my daughter informs me that the Xbox is red. Sorry honey we can't play guitar hero now daddy needs a nap.

After some research the red ring of death can be repaired by better securing the heat sinks.

I would love the new Xbox 360 as it's quieter.

Halo Reach comes out on Tuesday. Halo is the only reason I bought the Xbox. I've grown to love it. I have a lot invested in it, games, controllers, HD's, my rep.

Has anyone successfully repaired the RROD?

If I come home on Tuesday with a new game and a new Xbox my wife will, well let's just say it won't be pretty.

Isn't MS still repairing Xbox's with the RROD for free under a repair extension? They never did get it completely right on the first model.

MSFT extended the warranty by 3 years. Mine expired last February.

I fixed one with new heatsinks and by following some online directions - I spent quite a bit of time doing this.

The repair lasted about 3 days, then the RROD returned.

We ended up getting a new XBox.

Recent conversation:

wife: can you fix it?

me: maybe.

wife: I guess we need a new one. we can't live with out it.

me: (perplexed look trying to discern if she was sarcastic or not)

wife: they're like $400.

me: oh no they're not that much.

me: (putting halo reach and new xbox 360s on will call at Microcenter)Cool

Bright Side:

If you attempt repair, and fail, it may take the "edge" off buying a new one. Maybe.

If you attempt repair, and suceed, even temporarily, you have bought more time to squirrel away cash for the new one. Even if it requires a real squirrel!

I successfully repaired my nephews 360, making me the most favorite uncle Wink Nine months and counting. I just purchased a kit similar to this:
