MBP slowness... Causes? - DP - 09-28-2010

A fellow teacher has an older 17" MBP that is running very slowly. Startup is slow, apps open slow, everything runs slow. I had her check that both RAM slots were working and there is only 100GB used on her 180GB HD. S.M.A.R.T. status is verified and I had her zap the PRAM. I will also have her run DU and the hardware test.
So could a RAM stick be bad and will a bad HD cause this? What about the chance of malware or virus? There are no other problems other than it running very slowly.
I don't what processor it has or what OS it's running-am waiting for that info. It is 2-3 years old.

Is it a constant thing? I ask because the MBP I use is dog slow when not being plugged in to a power outlet. It is almost unusable. Soon as it's plugged in it is fine, though. I don't know what the problem with it is. You may want to see if she's experiencing the same issues I have. May help determine a fix (even though I don't have one).

She did say her battery will need replacing-getting 2 hours out of it at the most.

Have you tried setting up a new user account to see if it is still slow with a different account? Have you checked the Activity Monitor to see what processes are running?

Tell her to do a safe boot.

'Fixes slow startups about 80% of the time.

and if that doesn't help, startup with a system DVD, run disk utility.

The system probably needs a through clearing out of cache, etc. Check out the Applejack utility and give it a try.

If, by "malware," you mean badly written, incompatible, or corrupt software then yes, I think you're on to something...

I say that the best thing for her to do is to save her own documents then do a nuke'n'pave. Re-install software, especially of the driver or 'helpful utility' kind, one-at-at-time and with great attention to the results.

up top, on the right of the screen is the battery icon. there is a pull down where you can make changes to performance (aka energy saver control panel). High performance when plugged in, and power conservation when running on battery is probably what you want.
