As evidenced by these people ...

Let's see, we are a polygamous family, living in a country where polygamy is against the law ...

Let's appear in a REALITY TV SHOW!!

Good for them.

For the lazy, the man in question is married to one woman, but considers three more to be spouses. They all have 13 kids.

If this is how they want to live, who has a right to say otherwise? Well, Utah says they do:

"Although it is rarely prosecuted, bigamy is a third-degree felony in Utah, punishable by a prison term of up to five years. Under the law, a person can be found guilty of bigamy through cohabitation, not just legal marriage contracts."

This needs to go to the supreme court - what goes on in consenting adults bedrooms or living rooms is none of anyone's business.

sorry, but this is gonna go political fast

I agree this particular law is in a bit of a gray area ...

I don't personally agree with legislating morality like this. Next thing you know, they're going to outlaw homosexual marriage or something!

but, bottom line, there's a law in the state they live in that says what they are doing is a crime. you have to question their intelligence when they decide it's a good idea to go on TV and flaunt their "illegal" lifestyle.

For the life of me, I couldn't see why a man would want more than one wife.

Nagging x 4. Headaches x 4.

He's got a high tolerance for pain.

The sanctity of marriage went out the door a long time ago.

Exactly!

To me, it would make much more sense for a woman to have four or five husbands:
One to make lots of money;
One to maintain the house;
One to maintain the yard and vehicles;
One to cook meals;
One to take care of any intimate needs.

Why the heck would anyone do the first 4 without getting the last one?

From the link above.

Over the past 10 years, Utah's historically insular polygamist community has worked to educate the public and state agencies about its culture. State agencies now better understand the unique aspects of polygamous culture and plural families are less hesitant to seek help when needed, Principle Voices co-founder Anne Wilde said.

The Brown family's decision to do a reality TV show was sort an extension of that education work, said Wilde, who knows the family well. Now she fears an investigation will cast a pall over any progress and instill fear in plural families.

"If it really goes to a court situation, then our people are going to go right back into isolation," she said.

I watched the opening episode of "Sister Wives", just because I was curious. Egad. What I did find interesting was how relatively normal this particular group is in relation to other polygamist groups I've read about or seen on TV. Of course just a week or two earlier I watched a movie called "The 19th Wife", and that was also about a polygamist group in Utah. They were very different from this family, including the way the women and children dressed and the attitude of the men about just how much freedom their wives were allowed to have. In this reality series, everybody wears traditional street clothes and at least two of the wives work fulltime outside the home. Dad drives a Lexus, and I saw a small fleet of Suburbans in the parking area, and I assumed that was one for each wife.

I am sure you could find men stupid enough to do the first 4 items. There's always that slim chance that they might get laid. That's enough to keep most men married.
