sharing genealogical info with others - Mr Downtown - 11-05-2010 In preparation for a forthcoming family reunion, I've been doing some genealogical research, which I'd like to share with a bunch of family members. Most of them are elderly and not computer users, but they generally have kids who would probably know how to go to an easy website address and maybe even be able to print out a PDF of pedigree and group sheets. First, are there any good, widely used, free sites to put pedigree and group sheets out there to share with other researchers? Second, if I just make a PDF with all the info, where can I put it on the Web with an easy-to-remember address? All the domain names (oursurname.com, oursurname.info, etc.) are still available, but I'm hesitant to pay $12/year for a decade or more. Re: sharing genealogical info with others - rgG - 11-05-2010 If you do the free 14 day free trial at Ancestry.com, you can upload your info and then send links to your family and friends so they can view it. They are able to view your family tree info for free, and even print books and things from it, via the Ancestry store. If you have the info in the GED (I think that is the correct name) format, you can just upload it directly into the Ancestry form, so you do not have to re-key in the information. If you cancel your free 14 day membership before it is over, they will not charge your credit card. I just did this recently, and it worked very well. I did not send the links to relatives, but I did send "invitations" to myself, to see if it would work, and it did. Your relatives can also download the info, from the Ancestry website, as a GED file. There is at least one free GED reader, but I don't remember the name of it. I found the GED reader for Mac via Google. You and your family can still view your uploaded info even after the free trial is over, you just can't us the Ancestry databases for research. Re: sharing genealogical info with others - Acer - 11-05-2010 BTW, I'd at least grab yoursurname.com while you can, if only to keep it out of a squatter's control. Re: sharing genealogical info with others - AlphaDog - 11-06-2010 My single experience with posting genealogical data online was a nightmare. There's absolutely no way I'd ever put it up, and I most certainly would never post any information about living people. Beware. Oh, and rgG is referring to the GEDCOM format. Re: sharing genealogical info with others - davester - 11-06-2010 If you're going to post online, it is generally considered appropriate to remove birthdates and any other important info from the records of those who are living. Some people even say to remove first names, though that makes quite a mess of the tree. A number of genealogical programs have options for removing this type of info automatically before generating a gedcom for sharing if you specify it. |
