Front Row alternatives? - Ombligo - 11-26-2010 With more than 500 movies, 200 television programs (mostly mini-series) and 5000 plus songs, Front Row is a pain to navigate (particularly the movies). I like the clean look and metadata usage by Front Row but Apple has essentially seemed to abandoned it. If they would just allow playlists like in the music portion, I'd be happy. I tried a suggested work around but it was just a patch that created new issues. What are some alternatives that won't screw up my itunes or require me to rerip or redo my library? Re: Front Row alternatives? - onthedownlow - 11-26-2010 I personally, still after these years, perfer Boxeee: http://www.boxee.tv (just download the software). There are many apps to download and integrate into it (all from the within the software)...Netflix, Pandora, etc. Many people prefer Plex and I also have it on my system too, but it still doesn't do it for me like Boxee (esp. with the apps): http://www.plexapp.com/ - Plex will play your iTunes/DRM music though... ...but then again, with other copy-protected content...YMMV. Re: Front Row alternatives? - laarree - 11-26-2010 I settled on XBMC after trying out Plex for a while. I found it to be more flexible in the ways I needed it to be, and much more responsive too. Plex absurdly misidentified far too many of my movies and tv shows, and scraped dozens of gigabytes of metadata, fan art and other stuff, nearly all of which was useless to me. Correcting Plex's errors was nearly impossible. If all your stuff is in iTunes or is in iTunes-friendly formats, you might have a much better time with Plex than I did. But I find it easier to program FR than ATV Re: Front Row alternatives? - rjmacs - 11-27-2010 Use Plex, love Plex, no problems a la laarree. |
