Seems 13 is the new 12 ... - timg - 03-17-2011

at least in this years NCAA Basketball tournament.

in past years, it was nearly a lock that at least one 12 seed would score an upset in the first round.

this year, a 13 seed has already won their opening game, and another is leading midway through the second half.

edited to note which tournament I was babbling about ...

3 of the 4 completed games were within 1 or 2 points. Disconcertingly close for teams I thought that were
seriously outmatched in some cases.

It just points out the lack of talent at the college level these days.

If you're any good, you don't stay more than a year at the college level.

Besides, they call it March Madness for a reason ...

Not to mention, the "first round" is now "the second."

maybe more like one and a quarter.

There were play in games in previous years too. not really sure why they thought they needed more. I don't think those games generate that much money.

Conference shifts, I think.
There were play-in games before, but they never called them the "first round" until now, AFAIK.
