Hmmm... need a graduation gift... - PeterB - 04-09-2011 ... on a human genetics theme. I was thinking lapel pin, but am open to other ideas... Geeky gifts rock! Thanks cbelt. Interesting earrings too: http://www.thednastore.com/dnastuff/earrings2.html http://www.thednastore.com/dnastuff/DNAearrings.html http://www.thednastore.com/index.html#amber Maybe could use a female perspective here, since the gift is for a woman. Women of MRF, which of these would you actually want and/or wear, if any of them? LOL Re: Hmmm... need a graduation gift... - Janit - 04-09-2011 Does she have pierced ears? If yes, it's worth finding out if she has any metal sensitivities that limit which metals she can wear. If she does not have pierced ears, a necklace would be better, as the earrings would need to be converted. Plus non-pierced earrings are easy to lose. I'd rate the silver helices highest (least risky). They are simple, elegant and can be worn in many contexts. I also like the amber earrings a lot, but they are less neutral. If she likes amber, they would be a big hit, but if it's not part of her color palette, she might never wear them. I don't like the color-enameled ones so much. It's hard to tell without seeing them in person. They might be funky, or just tacky. Re: Hmmm... need a graduation gift... - Carm - 04-09-2011 My wife also liked the plain silver helices. She though the color enameled looked cheesy. Joe Re: Hmmm... need a graduation gift... - PeterB - 04-10-2011 Yeah, I'm coming to the same conclusion. Interesting too, and maybe it's just personal preference, but I actually prefer silver and silver-toned of this stuff over gold or gold-toned. There's just something very classy about silver. Re: Hmmm... need a graduation gift... - Racer X - 04-10-2011 I agree Peter. My wedding ring was platinum, so it wouldn't react with the oxidizer chemicals in the darkroom. I have a lot of silver cuff links and tie accessories. The GF gave another vote for the simple silver helix earings or necklace. The amber ones are great too. But she and I both like amber. Re: Hmmm... need a graduation gift... - cbelt3 - 04-10-2011 Racer... I never thought about that. So THAT's why my parent's wedding rings were platinum. (Dad was a geologist... lots of assaying chemicals.) Re: Hmmm... need a graduation gift... - Racer X - 04-10-2011 geologists use a lot of nitric acid for assaying precious metals. There is a rub test on slate maybe, then various acids to see how it reacts. 18K white gold is still 25% not gold (usually nickel, which will react to acids and oxidizers) You can make white gold using platinum, but it isn't that common. Most expensive way to make white gold. Platinum jewelry alloys are quite strong, so it is very common for better pieces to be white gold, with platinum settings for the stones. Prongs don't bend or loosen easily. Also, since platinum is so strong when alloyed for jewelry, someone working with their hands won't flatten out the palm side of the ring, or wear it down very easily. Mine was still a perfect circle after a decade.
