Yeah! That's my girl! - bazookaman - 04-20-2011 My almost 4 year old daughter was standing out on our porch with my 30 something brother when she looked up in the sky and said, "Look Uncle! CONTRAILS!" My brother looked up than at me with his normal "WTF did she just say?" look. And I told him. He replied "What the heck are contrails?" My daughter pointed up and replied "Those! The trails behind the jet!" Re: Yeah! That's my girl! - haikuman - 04-20-2011 So now you have to buy her a GulfStream 5 instead of a Mercedes Coupe for her 16th Birthday *(:>* Re: Yeah! That's my girl! - rgG - 04-20-2011 Better than if she had said the VTPKL. ![]() Re: Yeah! That's my girl! - JEBB - 04-20-2011 She sound to be more aware of the world around her than does your brother. You may even have a budding genius in your house. Re: Yeah! That's my girl! - ztirffritz - 04-20-2011 Not to brag, but my 1.75 year old looks up at the ceiling when he hears airplanes flying over our home and says "Arpee!!" which is code for "Airplane!!!!". He can often pick them out of the sky when we're walking or hiking before the rest of us. So either my boy is a genius too, or little humans are able to learn much more than we typically give them credit for and some of us make better use of the ability than others. Re: Yeah! That's my girl! - gabester - 04-20-2011 Yeah, kids can be very smart. They can also still be very ignorant of things in the world. It's the reason they need many years of protected nurture before they're ready to face the world full-fledged as adults. But do we need a new positive term here to counter VTPKL? I'll propose Bazookaman's Intelligent Child Has Said This. BICHST! And I do mean to brag, my daughter has been talking about contrails since she was 3. But she also can tell you 2 of the 4 fundamental forces of nature (mostly because, how do you explain the strong and weak nuclear forces to a child?) But good job Bazookaman on educating your daughter... let's just hope than in a few years she doesn't start telling you about CHEMTRAILS instead. g= Re: Yeah! That's my girl! - bazookaman - 04-20-2011 It all started when we were watching Cars for the first time and she asked what those things where in the sky. And I wasn't trying to brag either. I have no frame of reference. So for all I know every kid is that smart. I'm not around her little play friends enough to evaluate them on that level. Her friends are more like "the active one" or "the grumpy one" or "the whiny one". Not so much "the smart one". Re: Yeah! That's my girl! - Lew Zealand - 04-20-2011 AFAI have seen, every kid is that smart if adults talk to them and answer their questions. They will also pick up things you have said only once or twice and parrot them back to you in reasonable context, or later make the connections to the actual context and have learned it for good. Researchers have done studies comparing the learning capabilities of human babies and great ape babies and it's completely different. The apes learn the entire concept of what they need while they're doing it for the first few times, because the scope and depth what they need to learn is simpler (of course). Human babies mostly just copy actions at first. There is little deeper learning because they need to learn so many things and those things are more complex, so just parroting what the parents do is better (the parents must be doing it for a good reason as they're not dead yet!). The babies can learn the reason and meaning of it later as they spend more time doing those activities. I'll look for the reference… Re: Yeah!
