Facetime compatible app for Android? - DharmaDog - 05-05-2011

I thought that Apple made FaceTime more or less "Open", so that developers could use it as a standard for other video calling/conferencing devices like Android phones. But I'm having a hard time finding such a thing for Android. Does it exist yet?

Let me be clear about what I mean. I am not looking for an app to use instead of FaceTime, that must be installed on both the iPhone and Android phone that will allow video calling. I'm not looking for Skype. I want an app to install on the Android phone only, that will allow it to be called by FaceTime users be they on an iPhone or Mac or iPad, and will allow the Android user to make a call to the FaceTime users as well.

Does this exist, and is it as seamless as FaceTime on the iPhone?

None exists as of yet. Apple has not released the spec for facetime even though introducing it as open.

I have heard of a startup trying to gain access to / reverse engineer facetime and develop for Android, but they are still very early in the game.

Looks like Google will settle on gmail video chat as an Android standard. Thankfully an iOS app exists already for that - Vtok.
