Confused about 'Steam' game registration - landlox - 05-30-2011

Hi -

[summary of question-once I download & register a game via steam on my laptop via broadband at a friend's place, do I need broadband to keep starting up or playing the game at home where I have dial-up?]

As an old Civ III player & visiting a friend w/Civ V, I'm leaning towards getting it, for better or worse (not looking for buying advice, just explaining)...

I've never dealt with this Steam app business and what I'm reading isn't clear to me, so maybe someone can help.

My main concern is that, while my friend has broadband, i have dial-up at home. So I can download the game and register via Steam here, but it's unclear to me what happens when I get home.

===> Does Steam have to always be on & connected to start my game each time? Or can I just install & register here in broad-band friend land and just boot the game without having to think about it once I'm home?

===> Secondarily, Steam seems to say one can sign into their Steam account on any computer and play a game they'd already bought & registered on their own computers (as when a Steam registrant visits a friend). I'd like to do that on my laptop while at my friends - that is, using his account, so that I can make sure Civ V runs well enough to buy on my MacBook Pro, before buying. [He doesn't remember his account sign-in & we're waiting for Steam to send him info to sign in and change his password so we can try this.)

What I read seems to say you can do this -- or does it just mean 'transferring' an account to a different machine? Or you can run the PC version on a friends PC (we both have Macs) which sounds odd, but some things I've read seem to maybe say something like that.

Any help untangling the murky write-ups greatly appreciated

-Tnx

I don't think you need to have that high a speed in order to play a game through your Steam account.

Steam does not always have to be connected. I have played games where I am connected to Steam and then my Internet connection cuts out. The game does not stop nor is there any problems later on when I re-log in to Steam. I don't know what happens if you are not connected in the first place when you start up a game.

From what I can tell, you can access your Steam account and games through any computer you're at. But, you need to download the Steam program/app and you need to download the game to that computer.

I purchased Civ V a week back or so ago and it's VERY nice. It seems a little slow on my MacBook Pro i7 2010 but it plays fine.

Ok, a little add-on about different machines. My wife runs a Wintel laptop and my impression is that I can download the Steam app/program to her machine and access my account there. I believe that I can then play the PC version of Civ V on her machine.
